About

Avicenna Dental is a full-service family dentistry practice located in Manhattanville, West Harlem, in the heart of New York City. Established in 2007, the practice has been serving the community for 18 years[4], building a reputation as a comprehensive dental care provider committed to delivering high-quality treatment across multiple dental disciplines. Under the leadership of Dr. Afshan Haque, DDS, CEO[4], Avicenna Dental has grown to become a multi-specialty practice that welcomes patients of all ages, from toddlers to seniors, with a family-focused approach that emphasizes personalized care at every life stage[3].

The practice's core mission centers on making dental care accessible, comfortable, and effective for the diverse communities of West Harlem. Avicenna Dental distinguishes itself through its comprehensive service offerings, which span general dentistry, pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, and implant dentistry[2]. This multi-specialty approach allows patients to receive coordinated, integrated care without needing to visit multiple providers, streamlining their dental treatment experience and ensuring continuity of care.

Avicenna Dental's team comprises highly qualified dental professionals with impressive credentials. Dr. Joana Compere, the general dentist, is an Ivy League graduate who earned her DDS degree from Columbia University College of Dentistry[5], one of the nation's most prestigious dental schools. Dr. Yoomi, the pediatric dentist, is a child advocate dedicated to delivering excellent dentistry for infants, toddlers, children, and young adults, including those with special healthcare needs[5]. Dr. Sung Kim, the cosmetic dentist, holds an undergraduate degree in Life Sciences from Queen's University in Canada and earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from NYU College of Dentistry[5]. Dr. Jae Kim, a board-certified orthodontist, brings extensive experience practicing orthodontics throughout New York City and comes from a family of dentists[5].

The practice's service portfolio is extensive and addresses virtually all dental needs. In general dentistry, Avicenna Dental provides thorough check-ups to assess oral health and detect issues early, professional dental cleanings to remove plaque, tartar, and stains, tooth-colored fillings to restore function and appearance after decay, porcelain crowns to cover and protect severely damaged teeth, dental implants as permanent replacements for missing teeth, root canal therapy to relieve tooth pain by treating infected or damaged pulp, teeth whitening for a brighter smile, and custom night guards to prevent teeth grinding and jaw pain[1]. The orthodontics department offers multiple treatment options, including traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces (hidden braces placed behind teeth), and nearly invisible clear aligner trays like Invisalign®[3]. Pediatric dentistry services include regular check-ups, cleanings, and fluoride treatments to prevent cavities, thorough evaluations to spot and address dental issues early, safe sedation to ease anxiety during treatment, protective sealant coatings on molars to prevent decay, and tooth-colored fillings for natural-looking cavity repair[1].

Avicenna Dental's commitment to accessibility is reflected in its insurance policies. The practice accepts most major insurance plans, including PPO and Medicaid plans[2][3], and staff members are available to verify coverage and explain benefits to patients. The practice is currently welcoming new patients of all ages[3], demonstrating its commitment to expanding access to quality dental care in the community.

Located at 565 West 125th Street with the Old Broadway entrance in New York, NY 10027[2], Avicenna Dental maintains convenient hours to serve working families and busy professionals. The practice operates Monday through Saturday, with extended evening hours on Tuesday and Thursday[2], making it accessible to patients with varying schedules. What sets Avicenna Dental apart is its integration of preventive, restorative, cosmetic, and orthodontic care under one roof, combined with a team of highly credentialed specialists who are committed to patient comfort and outcomes. The practice's emphasis on pediatric dentistry and family-centered care reflects an understanding that building positive dental habits early in life contributes to lifelong oral health. I usually dread going to the dentist. However, this was absolutely the best visit I have ever had. Even though I have a low tolerance for pain, my filling wasn't bad. The front desk staff was pleasant, and they even took my insurance. Great experience. Definitely recommend!

EDIT BELOW: I spent years at Avicenna dental and was lukewarm on their services. My cleanings generally did not feel particularly thorough, and were completed quickly, but the convenience outweighed my concerns. Recently however I needed an orthodontic procedure, and I was charged an absurd amount for not even 10 minutes of work. I had been told an orthodontist would be handling it, but the scope of work did not appear consistent with a full orthodontic intervention. I am extremely disappointed, and will not be returning, even for routine dental work. Amendment: I was invited to discuss with the dentist, and the discrepancy in understanding what “fix” entails lies in a miscommunication. Had I been informed what exactly the cost entailed, I would have been able to make an educated decision. That said, the fees are what they are, while on the patient side everything appeared arbitrary. I appreciate Avicenna Dental reaching out and discussing further with me. Review updated to reflect my overall experience. They are competent, if a bit rushed at times (hence my concerns with cleanings).

Too many policies and procedures that don’t benefit the patients in anyway. Dental cleanings are preventative twice a year. Im told that I should only come once because x rays aren’t covered by the insurance twice in a year or I can pay out of pocket. Cleanings can’t happen without x-rays. I book the appointment 6months out only for them to cancel the appointment because I didn’t confirm the appointment via phone when they called me a day prior. Its the holiday season and its been extremely busy and I was traveling. Mind you I never received any text messages. Like at all. Just a call the day before saying to confirm. Not one text. Not any information saying hey your appointment will be cancelled if you don’t call us back. Nothing. So I call back the morning of the appointment to confirm as directed and they are like we can’t honor the appointment because you didn’t respond to the messages and calls. Meanwhile Im responding by calling and I never received any text messages. They say, “its nothing we can do, we can rebook for next month.” Im like I waited six months for this appointment. How do you cancel the appointment because I wasn’t able to answer the phone days prior. It’s unfortunate that in our communities we can’t receive proper treatment and this is how dental health is managed FOR KIDS! It’s really sad and I definitely won’t be returning here. Its hard finding a dentist in network but its clear Im not gaining anything by being a patient with this one.

I am extremely disappointed and angry about my experience with this dental office. The staff is incredibly rude, disrespectful, and completely unprofessional. I was treated terribly just for asking basic questions about charges. They took money without clear explanation, and it honestly felt like theft. Their billing practices are misleading and dishonest. Because of how wrong this felt, I had to contact my insurance directly to report and verify the charges. Instead of trying to fix the issue, they were dismissive, rude, and acted like they didn’t care at all. This place prioritizes money over patients and has zero integrity. I regret ever coming here. I would never recommend this office to anyone. Save yourself the stress, disrespect, and potential financial issues and go somewhere else.

Front desk staff has gotten so disrespectful for absolutely NO REASON in the last few months. If I’m an established patient calling to inquire about after care they shouldn’t be so dismissive about it. I’ve had other receptionists at Avicenna be kind and helpful. I can have empathy for receptionists, but the verbal attitude is disgusting. If you can’t communicate with patients competently and kindly you should find somewhere else to work. And yes I posted my full name so you can be aware it who it was. I’ve been coming here over 4 years and this is the first time I’m absolutely disgusted by the front desk.
