About
The Charles B. Wang Community Health Center (CBWCHC) stands as a beacon of comprehensive, culturally competent healthcare in the heart of Lower Manhattan, specifically serving the vibrant and diverse Asian American community and all residents of New York City. Founded in 1971 by a group of dedicated medical students and community activists, the center began as a grassroots clinic in a storefront on 51 Bayard Street, driven by the urgent need to address the severe language and cultural barriers preventing Chinatown's predominantly immigrant population from accessing essential medical services. Named in 2006 in honor of Charles B. Wang, the visionary co-founder of Computer Associates International and a passionate philanthropist whose generosity enabled its expansion, the center has grown from its humble beginnings into a premier, federally qualified health center (FQHC) with multiple locations, anchoring its flagship facility at 268 Canal Street. The core mission of CBWCHC is to ensure that everyone, regardless of their ability to pay, immigration status, or language spoken, has access to high-quality, affordable, and patient-centered healthcare. This mission is deeply embedded in every aspect of its operations, reflecting a profound commitment to health equity and social justice. What truly sets this institution apart is its unparalleled expertise in providing linguistically accessible care; services are offered in numerous Chinese dialects (including Mandarin, Cantonese, Taishanese, and Fujianese), as well as Korean, Vietnamese, and Spanish, effectively dismantling the primary obstacle faced by many limited-English-proficient patients. Beyond mere translation, the center practices cultural humility, integrating an understanding of cultural beliefs, dietary practices, and health perceptions into its care models. Its unique value proposition lies in its holistic 'one-stop-shop' model, where primary medical care, dental services, mental health counseling, health education, and social support services are seamlessly coordinated under one roof. This integrated approach is critical for managing chronic diseases, addressing social determinants of health, and providing continuity of care. The center's expertise extends to specialized areas such as Asian health initiatives (e.g., hepatitis B screening and management, which disproportionately affects the Asian community), school-based health centers, women's health, and senior services. Its distinction from typical medical practices is evident in its deep community roots; it functions not just as a clinic but as a trusted community pillar, engaging in extensive outreach, advocacy, and education. Governed by a community-based board of directors, the center remains responsive to the evolving needs of the neighborhoods it serves. The combination of its rich history as a community-founded initiative, its unwavering mission-driven focus on the underserved, its clinical excellence recognized by national quality accolades, and its deep-seated cultural and linguistic specialization makes the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center an indispensable and exemplary model of community healthcare in America.

Customer Reviews
Once Dr. Bui walked into the exam room it was all business. I had several pressing issues which Dr. Bui was able to handle and resolve immediately. She was very attentive and personable with a great bed side manner; I can tell right off the bat after our first meeting that Dr. Bui genuinely cares about her patients. Overall it was a pleasant first office visit with Dr. Bui !!!! Thank you.
The doctor (Dr. Pong) is super knowledgeable, attentive and patient! And bloodwork and vaccines were done in the same office by nice nurse and staff, the front desk was very helpful to me when setting up the new MyCharts app. The whole visit was super fast with everything done efficiently. We even set up the next appointment and I was told doctor will personally call me, as always, to discuss the blood work results.
Dr. Julie was amazing, she listened to every single care I expressed & explained into complete detail about what she would do & where she would refer me to & for what. I am completely satisfied & honored to continue having her as my primary care physician. I would recommend her to anyone who needs a great attentive physician.
Dr Debra is just impeccable. The complete package. She’s knowledgeable, authentic, relatable, compassionate. I feel seen and not judged, held and not confined, and I’m genuinely grateful for our sessions together. I’ve struggled for over a year to find a good therapist after my therapist of 6 years had passed. As times are getting more and more trying, I feel extremely fortunate to have a therapist I can trust.
I feel really lucky to have my care at Charles B. Wang Community Health Center. My doctor Nicole and the whole team are super kind, careful, and professional. They’ve helped me even through telemedicine when I couldn’t go in person, and always keep me up to date with my vaccines and checkups.
When my doctor isn’t available, the other doctors are also great — everyone treats me with respect and care.
They even help me find specialists through their network.
Really thankful for such a caring and dedicated team!
