About
The Charles B. Wang Community Health Center (CBWCHC) is a pillar of healthcare accessibility and cultural competence in New York City, renowned for its unwavering commitment to serving the Asian American, immigrant, and low-income communities. Founded in 1971 as the Chinatown Health Clinic, its genesis was a direct response to the glaring lack of linguistically and culturally appropriate health services for the burgeoning Chinese immigrant population in Lower Manhattan. What began as a small storefront operation has evolved into a comprehensive, federally qualified health center (FQHC) with multiple locations, with the Walker Street site serving as a critical downtown hub. The center was renamed in 2006 in honor of Charles B. Wang, the co-founder of Computer Associates International and a monumental philanthropist whose generosity catalyzed the expansion of its mission and facilities. The CBWCHC operates on a foundational belief that quality healthcare is a fundamental human right, not a privilege contingent on language proficiency, insurance status, or cultural background. Its mission is to provide comprehensive, affordable, and patient-centered primary and preventative care to all, with a dedicated focus on eliminating health disparities for Asian Americans and other underserved groups. This mission is brought to life by a multilingual staff fluent in over a dozen Asian dialects and languages, including Mandarin, Cantonese, Toisanese, Korean, and Bengali, ensuring that communication barriers never impede care. The center's expertise extends far beyond basic medical services; it is a national leader in integrating behavioral health, dental care, nutrition, and social services under one roof, adopting a holistic 'whole-person' model. What truly sets the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center apart is its deep, authentic community integration. It functions not just as a clinic but as a trusted community institution, intimately understanding the social determinants of health—such as immigration stress, housing insecurity, and cultural stigma around certain illnesses—that disproportionately affect its patient population. Its unique value proposition is this powerful combination of clinical excellence, linguistic specialization, cultural humility, and a robust enabling services department that assists patients with insurance enrollment, interpretation, and referrals. In a competitive healthcare landscape, CBWCHC distinguishes itself through its relentless advocacy, its role as a training ground for culturally competent future healthcare providers, and its innovative programs targeting specific community needs, such as hepatitis B prevention and screening, which is highly prevalent in Asian populations. It stands as a beacon of how community-centric design and advocacy can create a healthcare environment where every individual, regardless of origin or economic standing, is treated with dignity and receives the highest standard of care.

Customer Reviews
I recently found out Charles B. Wang Community Health Center also offer dental and eye care services. I saw Dr. Judy Lo, an OD, today at their 125 Walker St location. Dr. Lo was friendly, professional and provided me with great service so much that I was willing to go to her office in Flushing, Queens for a follow up test instead of a referral nearby.
I love all the doctors and staff at CBWCHC! And there is never a long wait time! CBWCHC definitely needs to advertise the services offered at their Walker St location!
Dr. Kathleen Phung is incredibly kind, patient, and professional. She always takes her time to answer all of my questions and truly cares about my baby. Every visit has been a great experience. If I hadn’t moved to Atlanta, I would definitely continue having Dr. Kathleen Phung as my baby’s pediatrician. Highly recommend!
Very attentive. Easy to understand my dental problem and solution. Walk out of the office felt confident that my dental welfare is under well care. As long as I follow Dr’s advise. Brush my teeth after every meal.
