Customer Reviews
I've been coming here for over 10 years. Dr. Holloway is efficient and does a great job taking care of your teeth. I've had a few fillings and inlays done over the years and never had any issues after the work has been done.
I just re-scheduled an appointment the day before and didn't have any issues with the front desk.
I had been a patient here for at least 8 or 9 years prior to the exceptionally rapid decline.
I started having issues about a year ago.
Stay away. Mario needs to be fired. The first time I saw him at the desk he answered the phone, someone was asking for medication. He was very short with the caller on the phone and then when he hung up was talking smack about her to the other receptionists. Anyone in the waiting room could hear it. If this doesn't encapsulate his attitude about his job and the patients that pay his salary, I don't know what does.
I needed two crowns. I went in and had them both prepped in the January/February of 2024. I had both permanent crowns put on. One I believe was February, the other was in March.
The end of August/beginning of September (it may have been end of September?), one of the crowns fell out. I went back in to have it re-glued. When I went in, some brand new, out of dental school dentist was my dentist. I have no idea why the office manager decided it was a good idea to put me with a different doctor after being with the same one for YEARS. She told me it was her first job and she had just gotten out of school. She took FOUR x-rays just to re-glue the tooth. She was struggling to keep the crown on and manage the tools. I told her I didn't think it felt right. I went home and begin feeling nerve pain at the gum line. Then it began throbbing. I went back in and was told it was fine. That they didn't think it was a good idea to remove and replace the crown but "would if I wanted to." I was told to give it a few more weeks then come back if it still bothered me. It did still bother me and I made an appointment elsewhere. As I began checking insurance to see what they would cover if I needed a root canal, I saw I was charged just shy of $1000 to re-glue the crown that fell out within months of the original procedure. I called to ask them to address this and the notorious Mario condescendingly told me that they no longer took my insurance and it was all out of pocket. Tough. Not his problem. This would have been great to know!!! The original crown only was $600. I pointed out that there was NO WAY a re-glue within months should even be charged, much less for double what the original procedure cost. Did they not stand by their work? He told me to deal with it. There was nothing he could do. When I spoke to two dentists they shrugged and told me they could do nothing.
I sought out a new dentist to assess the need for a root canal. She told me that I would indeed need a root canal. During the procedure the crown came off again. Since I had been charged such an insane fee for a re-glue, I was maxed out for the year and had to pay for the root canal out of pocket. I ultimately had to go back to Gramercy as my dentist did offer to redo the crown free of charge. The transition to a new owner was deceptive and not told to clients. When so many have been overcharged, you would think they would address this rather than thumbing their noses at their patients who are all leaving the same review and leaving the practice.
Today was my last straw with this place. The front desk are SO rude and incompetent. TWICE I asked for them to submit for pre-approval/an estimate to my insurance company. Weeks went by and nothing, so I'd call back and they had no record of the conversation and the request was never made. Twice this happened. Finally on the third time they actually did it. Before the appointment, I found out I was pregnant. It's a higher risk pregnancy, so I called the office and let them know (about the pregnancy, that my OB thought it was okay to still do, but I needed certain changes to the materials used in the procedure). The front desk said to just tell the dentist when I came in. I specifically asked if it could be discussed prior just in case and if it could be added to my chart, and was told "no" to both and to "just tell the dentist". Fast forward to today, the day of the appointment. I get there and the guy at the front desk is SO incredibly rude to the woman paying in front of me, and continued to be rude with me. He insisted I owed $1200 out of pocket. I explained that that's not what the estimate from my insurance said, and he interrupted me and said he didn't have that. I calmly explained that just because he didn't receive it didn't make it untrue, and that when I had asked I had been told i didn't need to send it. He proceeded to tell me that wasn't true, I wasn't told that. ... .... Once i forwarded him the estimate he begrudgingly updated my copay down to $400. I got brought back to the dentist, and let him know about the pregnancy and the request to not use epinephrine. He asked me some follow up questions, took a look at my teeth, and told me he wasn't comfortable doing the crown. No issue with that, I respect his opinion and he was kind about it. But now I had missed hours of work and wasted the dentists time to just turn around and go home, which ALL could have been avoided had my first phone call been taken seriously. The dental work I've received there has been fine, but honestly there are plenty of good dentists in NYC. I'm done, I'll be finding a new dentist that has a staff that aren't incompetent jerks.
If I could give zero stars, I would. This office overcharged me by over $1,000 for a root canal, and the experience was appalling from start to finish.
The receptionist, Mario, is completely unprofessional and lacks any sense of empathy. He initially told me my out-of-pocket cost would be $1,250 when it should have only been $230—a staggering 500% markup. Even though they had my insurance information and Explanation of Benefits on hand, they chose not to disclose the correct price until I discovered the issue by contacting Aetna myself.
When I sought a refund, the office’s response was incredibly shady. They told me to return on a specific day, and when I arrived, they flagged the transaction as "fraudulent" because the payment had been split across two cards. When I called for clarification, Mario screamed at me, accusing me of throwing a tantrum and flatly refused to issue a check, then *hung up on me*. He acted as if the entire situation was somehow *my* fault, despite his blatant overcharge. It felt like a deliberate attempt to take advantage of me—and who knows how many others he’s overcharged without their knowledge.
The dentist may have been competent, but the unethical behavior of the front office made the entire experience feel unsafe and dishonest. This office is not just unprofessional; they seem intent on exploiting their patients financially. Save yourself the headache and avoid this place at all costs.
Unfortunately, did not have the best experience with this dental office. They were indicated as in network by my insurance provider, yet the receptionist charged me out of pocket (I had to call numerous times to have them successfully process the refund to me once my insurance covered, and even then, did not get fully covered the way it would with other providers due to some discrepancies in the service code). If I had not been persistent, I would never have gotten the reimbursement I am entitled to. Additionally, the filling fell out in a matter of 2 months and was completed in an extremely aesthetically unpleasing manner. The new receptionist was extremely helpful, but other than that, would not recommend. It felt as though they only care about money and their convenience, not delivering care to patients and helping them through valid concerns. For the first time in my life, extremely disappointed with a dentist office. I never leave reviews for businesses or medical offices, but this experience was so beyond unpleasant, I wanted to let others know.
