About

Nestled in the prestigious Upper East Side of Manhattan at 53 East 66th Street, the practice of Dr. James H. Doundoulakis, DMD, MS, represents the pinnacle of specialized prosthetic and restorative dentistry. More than just a dental office, it is a center of excellence where art, science, and personalized care converge to rebuild smiles, restore function, and transform lives. Dr. Doundoulakis, a Master of Science-trained Prosthodontist, dedicates his practice exclusively to the complex realm of prosthodontics, the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation, and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance, and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues. The practice is built upon a foundation of profound expertise, cutting-edge technology, and an unwavering commitment to the highest standards of ethical and clinical excellence. The environment itself, in one of New York's most elegant neighborhoods, is carefully curated to be tranquil, comfortable, and discreet, reflecting the bespoke nature of the care provided. Dr. Doundoulakis's journey to this point is a testament to dedication. His path involved rigorous training beyond dental school, culminating in a specialized residency and a Master of Science degree in Prosthodontics. This extensive education provides the deep biomechanical, aesthetic, and physiological understanding necessary to tackle the most challenging dental reconstructions. The mission of the practice is clear: to provide truly transformative, long-lasting dental rehabilitation that not only looks exceptionally natural but also functions harmoniously with the body's intricate systems. This is not about quick fixes but about comprehensive, life-changing solutions that consider the patient's overall oral health, facial aesthetics, and personal aspirations. What truly sets this practice apart is its singular focus. As a specialist, Dr. Doundoulakis does not offer general dentistry but rather serves as a consultant and treating clinician for complex cases often referred by other dentists. His expertise encompasses full-mouth reconstruction, the management of severe wear, congenital disorders, and rehabilitation following trauma or illness. The practice is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including advanced 3D cone beam CT imaging for precise implant planning, digital intraoral scanners that replace messy impressions, and in-house CAD/CAM milling for the efficient fabrication of high-quality restorations. However, technology is always a tool in service of an artist's vision. Dr. Doundoulakis combines these digital tools with a masterful eye for color, shape, and texture, working closely with master dental technicians to create prostheses that are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. The unique value proposition lies in this blend of top-tier specialization, technological sophistication, and meticulous, hands-on craftsmanship. Each treatment plan is uniquely tailored, with Dr. Doundoulakis personally involved in every clinical and laboratory step. The practice operates on a philosophy of collaborative care, often working in tandem with the patient's general dentist, periodontist, oral surgeon, and other specialists to ensure a seamless and integrated treatment journey. This holistic approach, treating the mouth as an interconnected system rather than a collection of individual teeth, is fundamental to achieving stable, healthy, and beautiful results that stand the test of time. For patients navigating the often-overwhelming world of complex dental needs, Dr. Doundoulakis's practice stands as a beacon of clarity, expertise, and compassionate professionalism, dedicated to turning daunting dental challenges into reasons for renewed confidence and well-being.

UPDATE and clarification. I visited Dr. Doundoulakis's office three times, the first visit mere weeks subsequent to vast and traumatic harms inflicted by the general dentist Christine Skordeles. Dr. Doundoulakis prepared an extensive written treatment plan for me. Plan A: Redo the general dentist's upper-mouth work, back-wiring it to stabilize it. Plan B: Should the back-wiring fail, edentate (remove) all my upper front teeth, replacing the natural teeth with a row of implants. Dr. Doundoulakis handed me a $35,000+ invoice. I paid him, using my Chase credit card, a first installment of $15,000+. After my 2nd visit to his office—two visits in which he did no treatment, provided no cautions, and refused to reply to direct queries re Skordeles’s work—a grotesque and protruding CEREC crown placed by Skordeles failed, snapping the underlying canine at the gum-line. During my 3rd visit to his office, Dr. Doundoulakis did what he termed a "three-point glue-job" on that fail, sending me home with the broken CEREC crown jammed into my upper mouth, jutting out at a wild angle. Disturbed by these circumstances, I sought a second opinion. It was this: Plan A was not likely to succeed, and had never been likely to succeed, even before the canine fail. Then—to my astonishment—examination of Dr. Doundoulakis's treatment plan revealed that, without proper HIPAA authorization, he had disclosed to several other practitioners—including the offending practitioner Christine Skordeles—an apparently fictional characterization of my psychiatric diagnosis. He included a list of the psychiatric medications I was taking. Dr. Doundoulakis possessed no HIPAA authorization to disclose this information, and it is not clear to me where he obtained the diagnosis. Certainly he did not communicate with, nor reply to, my mental-health treatment team, which reached out to him repeatedly. It's of the utmost importance to understand that medical practitioners are forbidden by law to prattle psychiatric diagnoses and/or psychiatric-medication regimes—fictional or otherwise—to whomever they please, without explicit, highly specific, HIPAA authorization from the patient. Based on Dr. Doundoulakis's astonishing treatment plan, and the poor quality of his temporary work, I exited his care. I am under the treatment of the prosthodontist Dr. Michael Bruno—my top oral surgeon’s “first choice”—who has saved the functionality and appearance of my mouth. Work is ongoing, but the present and the future are bright. Please note: Dr. Doundoulakis did in fact refund my first $15,000+ payment. Please note also: Months after I exited Dr. Doundoulakis's care, his office contacted me with a request to please sign the required HIPAA authorization forms, retroactively. I invite you to consider the possibility that Dr. Doundoulakis's reply to my initial review is a deliberate falsehood. Please, I caution you: Don’t trust your appearance, and your very ability to eat, to Dr. James Doundoulakis. Who I am. I hold the MBA and PhD from Columbia University’s Graduate School of business. I am 20 years a tenured professor of Accounting. I am President of my cooperative apartment building. My father was a doctor, like his father before him. Grandpa made his house calls on a bicycle. My mother was a full professor of nursing at the University of Michigan. My older brother was an AIDS doctor from the beginning of the crisis. I am a colon cancer survivor: Doctors saved my life. I grew up hearing occasional cynicism about the medical profession, yes. But nothing prepared me for Dr. James Doundoulakis. In all my 67 years, I had only experienced, and continue to experience, the highest standards of ethical comportment and care for “the patient first.” I was not aware that such as Dr. Doundoulakis were even a possibility.
