About

The New York County Supreme Court, housed within the iconic and monumental New York County Courthouse at 60 Centre Street, is not a business in the traditional sense but rather the principal trial-level court and the heart of civil jurisprudence for New York County—coextensive with the Borough of Manhattan. Its history is deeply interwoven with the legal, political, and social fabric of New York City. The courthouse itself, a New York City Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was constructed between 1913 and 1927, designed by the renowned architectural firm of Guy Lowell. Its majestic Corinthian columns, grand stairways, and ornate interior murals by artists like Attilio Pusterla symbolize the gravity and permanence of the law. As a branch of the New York State Unified Court System, its mission is to adjudicate disputes fairly, impartially, and efficiently, upholding the rule of law, protecting rights and liberties, and providing equal access to justice for all residents of Manhattan. The court's expertise spans the broadest spectrum of civil litigation in the state. It is a court of general original jurisdiction, meaning it handles matters that other lower courts cannot. Its unique value proposition lies in its authority, historical legacy, and central role in presiding over some of the most complex, high-stakes, and precedent-setting litigation in the United States. What sets this institution apart is its sheer scale, influence, and the landmark cases that have passed through its halls. From commercial contracts and business torts to medical malpractice, construction liability, art law, and constitutional challenges, the New York County Supreme Court is where legal arguments of profound consequence are tested. Its Commercial Division, established within it, is internationally recognized for its sophisticated handling of complex corporate and commercial disputes, often involving multinational entities and billions of dollars. Judges in this court are elected to 14-year terms and are among the most experienced jurists in the state. The court operates not on a business model but on a constitutional and statutory mandate, serving as a critical public institution. Its daily operations involve hundreds of judges, court officers, clerks, and administrative staff managing a staggering docket. Beyond its judicial function, the courthouse is a civic monument, representing the aspiration for justice in one of the world's most dynamic and challenging urban environments. It stands as a physical and symbolic counterweight to the financial power of Wall Street just a few blocks away, asserting the authority of the law over all facets of city life. The combination of its historic setting, jurisdictional breadth, and profound impact on both local and national law makes the New York County Supreme Court a uniquely indispensable pillar of American jurisprudence.

Probably the most memorable experience in NYC. I loved it. From entry, the employee guys working there were so fantastic and friendly. I was wandering around the halls, headed on up to the 5th floor. The jury rooms, seeing the building in person was just a really ‘awe’ moment. You see it on tv, you see it in law and order and most famous criminal cases around the world, so to be there in the building felt surreal. Ireland 🇮🇪 we don’t have stuff like that. Not glamorised anyways. When you go through on arrival - your phone will be taken away. No photos ❌ (but you will get a number tag plate for your phone slot) you’ll go through an x-ray. After that, you can potter around. You are allowed into Jury rooms, you can listen to hot cases and regular simple cases that are happening around NYC. Jury duty benches all outside too. Vender machines close by. Was quiet enough on the day I went. Very cool - well I mean extremely cool if you like that sort of thing. Some people won’t get it, but those that do will love it 😍

I arrived at 11:30am on a Tuesday, and there was no line. Was sent to another place 10 min walk away to get the correct notary. Came back and the lady let my skip the line, so I was able to get everything done in less than 10 min. Staff was friendly.

Beautiful courthouse building in New York City. There are a few plazas nearby with food trucks, benches, fountains and sculptures. Lots of shows and movies are filmed in this area, especially law and order. Worth a visit if you are in the financial district or planning to go to the Brooklyn bridge.

Great place to use the bathroom with no problems. Beautiful building!! I was told to go here by an official nearby. Note: no photos or videos allowed which is unusual as I wanted to get pictures of the decor. The outside is worth taking a pic of.
