About

Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, a cornerstone of healthcare in Western New York, stands as a testament to compassionate, community-focused medicine rooted in a rich history of service. Founded in 1904 by the Sisters of Mercy, the hospital has grown from its humble beginnings into a state-of-the-art, 376-bed acute care facility located at 565 Abbott Road in South Buffalo. As a proud member of Catholic Health, one of the region's most comprehensive health systems, Mercy Hospital embodies a mission 'to reveal the healing love of Jesus to those in need.' This mission transcends mere medical treatment, fostering an environment where dignity, respect, and holistic care are paramount for every patient, family member, and visitor who walks through its doors. For over a century, Mercy Hospital has been more than just a building; it is a trusted neighbor and a vital community asset, evolving continually to meet the changing health needs of Buffalo and its surrounding communities.

Historically, the hospital's journey mirrors the growth and resilience of Buffalo itself. Established to serve the burgeoning immigrant and working-class populations of South Buffalo, the Sisters of Mercy provided care with limited resources but boundless dedication. This foundational spirit of serving the underserved remains deeply ingrained in the hospital's culture today. Over the decades, Mercy Hospital has undergone significant physical and technological transformations, including major modernization projects and expansions. A landmark moment was the opening of its new, $200 million patient tower in 2022, which houses private patient rooms, advanced surgical suites, and a modern emergency department, seamlessly blending cutting-edge technology with a patient-centered design that promotes healing and comfort.

Mercy Hospital's expertise is broad and deep, with nationally recognized programs setting it apart. It is a designated Stroke Center and Chest Pain Center, offering rapid, life-saving interventions for critical conditions. The hospital is renowned for its cardiac services, featuring comprehensive cardiology, cardiac catheterization labs, and cardiac surgery. Its orthopedic program, including joint replacement and spine surgery, is highly regarded, often leveraging robotic-assisted technology for precision and improved outcomes. Furthermore, Mercy provides robust surgical services, cancer care through its affiliation with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, women's health services, a 24/7 emergency department, and extensive rehabilitation services. This wide array of services ensures that comprehensive care is available close to home for the community it serves.

What truly sets Mercy Hospital apart is its unique value proposition: the powerful combination of advanced clinical science with an unwavering commitment to compassionate, person-centered care drawn from its faith-based heritage. In a competitive healthcare landscape, Mercy distinguishes itself through its intimate community feel within a larger system. Staff, many of whom live in the community, are known for their personal touch and deep commitment. The hospital's dedication to the 'whole person' extends beyond physical ailments to emotional and spiritual support, with pastoral care integral to its services. Its ongoing community health initiatives, outreach programs, and partnerships address social determinants of health, aiming to improve wellness beyond the hospital walls. Mercy Hospital of Buffalo is not just a place of treatment; it is a beacon of hope and healing, deeply woven into the fabric of its community, championing innovation while holding fast to the timeless values of mercy and compassion that have guided it for generations.

I needed same day blood work done and had just heard that Mac provides that service. I had to call my provider to send the order. Once that was done, I was able to go there to their walk-in clinic. I wasn’t sure how that would work, but it was super easy. They are in an office building on the side of the emergency room entrance. I usually go somewhere else, but it can be difficult to get an appointment and drop in waiting takes a lot of time usually. But once I got to Mac, I asked where to go and it was right there where I had entered. Everyone was super friendly and was able to process my paperwork from the doctor very quickly. I went straight in without any waiting and the person that drew my blood was friendly and very quick and did not hurt at all. And then I left. It took about 10 minutes in total. It was a very good experience and I’m going to start getting my blood work done there every time I need it.

I went to the er on 01/12/2026 and I just wanted to post about the nurse that took care of me. Andrew Laplante was my nurse and he was great! He made me feel comfortable and was very informative. I read some reviews before going and I was honestly nervous because some of the reviews were not good. Thankfully because of nurse Andrew my visit was not bad at all. He sat down next to me and had the answers to all my questions and made me feel better and relaxed just by listening to. Thank you Andrew!! I appreciate your help and kindness. You’re a great nurse and a good person!!

A little over a week ago a family member had an emergency while we was visiting the area. We are very fortunate to have come to this hospital. The staff here treated us wonderfully and helped ensure that we got the best care available. My family member and I didn’t plan on a hospital stay in NY but the staff and doctors, nurses and even the valet were top notch! Afterwards they have been wonderful to stay in contact with our doctor staff in Oklahoma to ensure they had all the tests results for continuing care. I’m extremely grateful we came to this hospital !!!

The emergency room staff and the actual nurses and cna’s were wonderful to my family member. However, the social worker staff were vultures and treated my family member like a number. I certainly hope when they’re an elderly person that someone in their family fights for them and tries to ask simple questions without getting the bum’s rush or yelled at so if I could give them a zero for the social workers and DOCTORS who didn’t even know who she was - I would. They kept calling her the wrong name saying oh sorry I’m just trying to catch up. ! What? Every doctor that we spoke to was useless and would give us no or conflicting information from the nurses. It was Inhumane how they treated all of us. Communication in the building is nonexistent so good luck and BEWARE.
