About

Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York stands as a cornerstone of health security and community well-being in the Buffalo region and across its service area. More than just a health insurer, it is a deeply rooted, community-focused organization that has evolved over decades to become a trusted partner in health for its members, employers, and the broader Western New York community. Its history is intrinsically tied to the fabric of the region, originating from the legacy plans of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York, which served the community for generations. A transformative shift occurred in 2009 when the company became a part of Highmark Inc., one of the largest health insurers in the United States. This union created a powerful synergy, blending local understanding and commitment with the scale, resources, and innovation of a national industry leader. The entity operates as an independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, allowing it to leverage the nationally recognized Blue brand while maintaining local control and decision-making, a critical factor in its ability to tailor solutions to regional needs. The mission of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York is to ensure accessible, affordable, and high-quality healthcare for its members. This mission is driven by a vision of a healthier community, where individuals are empowered to take charge of their health and well-being. The organization's philosophy extends beyond processing claims; it aims to be an active participant in improving the health ecosystem. This involves building collaborative relationships with a vast network of doctors, hospitals, and healthcare providers, and investing in community health initiatives that address social determinants of health, from food insecurity to behavioral health support. What truly sets this business apart is its unique dual identity: the local heart of a national powerhouse. Members and employer groups benefit from local customer service, community-based representatives, and programs designed specifically for Western New York's population and economic landscape. Simultaneously, they gain access to Highmark's extensive digital health tools, national provider networks for those who travel or live part-time elsewhere, and sophisticated data analytics and clinical programs developed from a much larger pool of insights. Its expertise is not merely in insurance underwriting but in care management, health technology integration, and value-based contracting with providers, which incentivizes quality and outcomes over the volume of services. The company's unique value proposition is its commitment to being a 'partner in health.' This is evidenced by innovative offerings like the Wellness Connection platform, which provides resources for physical, emotional, and financial well-being, and its significant investments in addressing health disparities within the community. Unlike many competitors, its non-profit heritage and community-led board ensure that decisions are made with the member's and community's best interest at the forefront, not just shareholder returns. In a competitive and often complex healthcare market, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York distinguishes itself through its unwavering local presence, its deep commitment to the region's vitality, and its ability to pair that local intimacy with the strength, innovation, and stability of the Highmark enterprise.

I would give a zero if possible. ON THEIR OWN BILL They have a phone number to call- each month to pay your premium, I promise you need to set aside 1 hour as no one knows what they are doing. They will not give you the correct number even after verifying your account with 9 other representatives (literally this is every month)they pass you to person to person all incorrect places, they will refuse to give you the phone number and say its breaks hippa, they clearly do not even know what hippa is. My child is 10, yes mom has to pay his premium plan. I will be switching back to MVP the second I can! Try calling corporate- you cannot do that either! I recorded the hour and 9 min this past time. Still cant pay my premium as no one would take my payment, but you bet your life on it tomorrow I will be the bad guy as it will be late. Their reps are uneducated on so many aspects it is sad. DO BETTER! Take note MVP the number is correct, the app is easy to use and make payments, always kind people. RUN FOR THE HILLS IF SOMEONE SUGGESTS HIGHMARK Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Based on everyone else's experience, it doesn't seem like BCBS actually gives a shit about their paying customers, which honestly, I could've guessed. I need to update my coordination of benefits for my insurance so my claims from my provider will be approved. I've tried for a week to get an email or email address from the benefits department, because I work the exact hours the benefits department is open. I've stated several times to email only, I am unavailable for phone calls, and without fail, everyday, I get a phone call that I CANNOT answer while at work. I was told they don't have emails. An insurance company this big, and not one person has an email address I can use?? Give me a break. They don't care about their customers, they just want your money.

Im a senior on Medicare who had Highmark as my blue cross provider. Last year I got a letter stating that my insurance would be dropped come Jan 2026. I called the number given on the letter for inquiries into this matter when I called I was told by them to ignore the letter that Highmark had experienced a computer problem and that I did indeed have insurance come January. Today 1/5/26 i went to see my Dr for an appointment to only be told that my insurance was no longer in effect. 😲 I had to cancel the appointment. I called Highmark and was told that it was indeed canceled. When I told them that I was reassured that it was going to still be in effect come January because of a computer error she told me that they did indeed have a computer error but that my insurance was canceled. I had to scramble to apply for new insurance which took over 3 hours of phone calls and conversations. I am now without any medical insurance untill February 2026 . I have blood thinner medicine due to pick up which is $150 with insurance im scared what its gonna cost without insurance. Probably more that I can afford. Now I have to figure out how to pay for it. I have no choice but to private pay for this medication because without I'll probably have a stroke. I will be calling Medicare tomorrow to report Highmark but im not gonna hold my breath they can do anything. Absolutely horrible company with unacceptable customer service

Had to redo everything when I got married. Only thing that changed was my.last name. All new group and copays I owe now when I'm disabled and unemployed. Can't find me when I call and spend 40 mins proving who I am. I get hung up on when explaining my issues. Unprofessional and useless. No urgent care covered. So happy to be moving to Canada. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.

Highmark is the worst thing to happen to Western NY since "Wide Right" They bought BCBS and systematically stripped it for profit and dominance. Time and again, this company has proven that it's profits over people. Cutting benefits, raising premiums, cutting reimbursements to service providers, raising premiums. The cycle will continue until no one can afford it any longer. News flash - we're close to that point already. Eroding the best healthcare option in town to a shell of itself within ten years all while buying the naming rights to a stadium. It's audacious and evil.
