About

Avicenna Dental Group - Kids & Adult Dentistry and Orthodontics, located at 565 West 125th Street (Old Broadway entrance) in New York, NY 10027, stands as a cornerstone of comprehensive family dental care in the heart of West Harlem's Manhattanville neighborhood. Established on May 21, 2007, as Afshan Haque, DDS, P.C., this **full-service dental practice** has proudly served the community for nearly two decades, accumulating **18 years of dedicated service** by 2025. Under the leadership of Dr. Afshan Haque, DDS, who serves as CEO and principal dentist, Avicenna Dental has grown into a trusted destination for patients of all ages seeking high-quality, accessible oral healthcare. The practice's name draws inspiration from the legendary Persian polymath Avicenna (Ibn Sina), a pioneer in medical sciences whose ancient contributions to dentistry—such as documenting oral surgical procedures, tooth extractions, and cauterization of carious teeth—resonate with the clinic's commitment to blending time-honored principles with modern innovation.

The **mission** of Avicenna Dental is to deliver exceptional, patient-centered dental care that promotes lifelong oral health, builds confidence through beautiful smiles, and fosters positive experiences, especially for children and families in underserved urban communities. Situated in a vibrant, diverse area of West Harlem, the practice addresses the unique needs of its patients by offering a welcoming environment where anxiety is minimized, and education empowers informed decisions. Their ethos emphasizes preventive care, gentle treatments, and long-term solutions, ensuring every visit contributes to healthier smiles and stronger overall well-being.

Avicenna Dental excels in a broad spectrum of **services** across **general dentistry**, **pediatric dentistry**, **orthodontics**, and **implant dentistry**. In general dentistry, patients receive thorough check-ups to detect issues early, professional cleanings to remove plaque and tartar, tooth-colored fillings for natural restorations, porcelain crowns for damaged teeth, dental implants as permanent tooth replacements, root canal therapy to alleviate pain from infected pulp, teeth whitening for brighter smiles, and custom night guards to combat grinding and jaw pain. Orthodontic offerings include traditional metal or ceramic braces for complex alignments, lingual braces hidden behind teeth for discretion, Invisalign-style clear aligners for a nearly invisible straightening experience, custom retainers post-treatment, and specialized pediatric orthodontic care to guide jaw and teeth development in children. Pediatric dentistry focuses on fun, gentle visits with regular check-ups, cleanings, fluoride applications, early evaluations, safe sedation options, and protective sealants on molars, all designed to prevent cavities and instill good habits from a young age.

What truly sets Avicenna Dental apart is its **unique value proposition**: a one-stop family dentistry hub in an accessible location, accepting most major insurance plans to make care affordable and convenient. With extended hours—including Saturdays from 9am-2pm—the practice accommodates busy urban lifestyles. Their emphasis on pediatric and orthodontic expertise differentiates them from general practices, providing seamless care from infancy through adulthood without referrals. Dr. Haque's hands-on leadership ensures personalized attention, contrasting with larger corporate chains that often feel impersonal. While not BBB accredited (with a B- rating due to past complaint response issues), the practice's longevity and community focus underscore reliability[3].

The team's **expertise** stems from years of experience and a patient-first philosophy, prioritizing minimally invasive techniques and advanced materials like tooth-colored composites and porcelain restorations for aesthetic, durable results. They stand out by creating a 'fun' atmosphere for kids, reducing dental fears that plague many practices, and offering orthodontic solutions for all ages to boost confidence. In a city saturated with dental options, Avicenna's West Harlem location eliminates travel burdens for locals, while their comprehensive services under one roof save time and ensure coordinated care. As a Professional Corporation led by a female dentist in a field historically male-dominated, they also represent diversity and empowerment. Ultimately, Avicenna Dental Group isn't just a clinic—it's a partner in your family's oral health journey, delivering smiles that last a lifetime through expertise, compassion, and innovation[1][2][3]. I usually dread going to the dentist. However, this was absolutely the best visit I have ever had. Even though I have a low tolerance for pain, my filling wasn't bad. The front desk staff was pleasant, and they even took my insurance. Great experience. Definitely recommend!

EDIT BELOW: I spent years at Avicenna dental and was lukewarm on their services. My cleanings generally did not feel particularly thorough, and were completed quickly, but the convenience outweighed my concerns. Recently however I needed an orthodontic procedure, and I was charged an absurd amount for not even 10 minutes of work. I had been told an orthodontist would be handling it, but the scope of work did not appear consistent with a full orthodontic intervention. I am extremely disappointed, and will not be returning, even for routine dental work. Amendment: I was invited to discuss with the dentist, and the discrepancy in understanding what “fix” entails lies in a miscommunication. Had I been informed what exactly the cost entailed, I would have been able to make an educated decision. That said, the fees are what they are, while on the patient side everything appeared arbitrary. I appreciate Avicenna Dental reaching out and discussing further with me. Review updated to reflect my overall experience. They are competent, if a bit rushed at times (hence my concerns with cleanings).

Too many policies and procedures that don’t benefit the patients in anyway. Dental cleanings are preventative twice a year. Im told that I should only come once because x rays aren’t covered by the insurance twice in a year or I can pay out of pocket. Cleanings can’t happen without x-rays. I book the appointment 6months out only for them to cancel the appointment because I didn’t confirm the appointment via phone when they called me a day prior. Its the holiday season and its been extremely busy and I was traveling. Mind you I never received any text messages. Like at all. Just a call the day before saying to confirm. Not one text. Not any information saying hey your appointment will be cancelled if you don’t call us back. Nothing. So I call back the morning of the appointment to confirm as directed and they are like we can’t honor the appointment because you didn’t respond to the messages and calls. Meanwhile Im responding by calling and I never received any text messages. They say, “its nothing we can do, we can rebook for next month.” Im like I waited six months for this appointment. How do you cancel the appointment because I wasn’t able to answer the phone days prior. It’s unfortunate that in our communities we can’t receive proper treatment and this is how dental health is managed FOR KIDS! It’s really sad and I definitely won’t be returning here. Its hard finding a dentist in network but its clear Im not gaining anything by being a patient with this one.

I am extremely disappointed and angry about my experience with this dental office. The staff is incredibly rude, disrespectful, and completely unprofessional. I was treated terribly just for asking basic questions about charges. They took money without clear explanation, and it honestly felt like theft. Their billing practices are misleading and dishonest. Because of how wrong this felt, I had to contact my insurance directly to report and verify the charges. Instead of trying to fix the issue, they were dismissive, rude, and acted like they didn’t care at all. This place prioritizes money over patients and has zero integrity. I regret ever coming here. I would never recommend this office to anyone. Save yourself the stress, disrespect, and potential financial issues and go somewhere else.

Front desk staff has gotten so disrespectful for absolutely NO REASON in the last few months. If I’m an established patient calling to inquire about after care they shouldn’t be so dismissive about it. I’ve had other receptionists at Avicenna be kind and helpful. I can have empathy for receptionists, but the verbal attitude is disgusting. If you can’t communicate with patients competently and kindly you should find somewhere else to work. And yes I posted my full name so you can be aware it who it was. I’ve been coming here over 4 years and this is the first time I’m absolutely disgusted by the front desk.
