About

Avicenna Dental Group - Kids & Adult Dentistry and Orthodontics is a premier full-service family dental practice located at 565 West 125th Street, Old Broadway entrance, in the heart of Manhattanville, West Harlem, New York, NY 10027. Nestled in a vibrant community, this state-of-the-art facility stands as a beacon of comprehensive oral healthcare, serving patients of all ages from toddlers to seniors with a commitment to excellence, compassion, and innovation. Specializing in **pediatric dentistry**, **general dentistry**, **orthodontics**, and **implant dentistry**, Avicenna Dental delivers a seamless blend of preventive, restorative, cosmetic, and specialized treatments under one roof, eliminating the need for multiple providers and ensuring coordinated care that prioritizes long-term oral health and aesthetic confidence.[2][3]

The mission of Avicenna Dental is rooted in making high-quality dentistry accessible, comfortable, and family-centered, particularly in an underserved urban neighborhood where dental anxiety and access barriers are common. By welcoming new patients of all ages and accepting most major insurance plans including PPO and Medicaid, the practice removes financial and logistical hurdles, fostering lifelong habits of oral wellness. Their family-focused approach shines through in gentle, fun pediatric visits designed to help children love the dentist, while adults benefit from advanced orthodontics and implants that restore natural function and beauty. With extended hours from Monday to Saturday—including evenings and weekends—the practice accommodates busy West Harlem schedules, reflecting a deep understanding of community needs.[2][3]

Avicenna Dental's expertise is embodied by its distinguished team of specialists. Leading the practice is **Dr. Joana Compere**, the general dentist and an Ivy League standout who earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from the prestigious Columbia University College of Dentistry. Complementing her is **Dr. Yoomi**, a dedicated pediatric dentist and child advocate who excels in treating infants, toddlers, children, young adults, and those with special healthcare needs, ensuring anxiety-free experiences through safe sedation options and playful environments. **Dr. Sung Kim**, the cosmetic dentist, brings rigorous training with an undergraduate degree in Life Sciences from Queen's University in Canada and a DDS from NYU College of Dentistry, specializing in smile enhancements like whitening and restorations. Overseeing orthodontics is **Dr. J (Dr. Jae Kim)**, a board-certified orthodontist with a lifelong career in NYC, hailing from a family of dentists yet carving a unique path to his expertise in alignment corrections.[4]

What truly sets Avicenna Dental apart is its **unique value proposition** as a one-stop orthodontic and family dentistry hub in West Harlem, where multi-specialty group practices are rare yet invaluable. Unlike standalone pediatric or ortho clinics, Avicenna integrates **general dentistry** (check-ups, cleanings, fillings, crowns, root canals, night guards), **pediatric services** (exams, sealants, fluoride, sedation), **orthodontics** (metal/ceramic braces, lingual braces, Invisalign-like clear aligners, retainers, early intervention for kids), and advanced options like **dental implants** and **cosmetic whitening**—all delivered with cutting-edge technology and a preventive ethos to catch issues early.[1][2][3] This holistic model mirrors modern group practices that evolved in the late 20th century for efficiency and comprehensiveness, but Avicenna personalizes it for a diverse, multicultural community.[5]

Patients rave about the welcoming atmosphere, with thorough first visits tailored to individual needs, and orthodontic options spanning invisible solutions for discreet treatment to robust braces for complex cases. Their emphasis on preventive care—thorough evaluations, deep cleanings, protective sealants—prevents costly future interventions, while natural-looking restorations like tooth-colored fillings and porcelain crowns maintain aesthetics. In a city saturated with high-end Midtown practices, Avicenna distinguishes itself through affordability (insurance-friendly), convenience (Harlem location, easy access via Old Broadway), and genuine care that builds trust across generations. Whether guiding a child's jaw development, straightening a teen's smile, or replacing an adult's missing teeth with lifelike implants, Avicenna empowers smiles that enhance confidence, health, and quality of life. As a pillar in Manhattanville, this practice not only treats but transforms oral health journeys, proving that exceptional dentistry thrives when rooted in community empathy and professional mastery. I usually dread going to the dentist. However, this was absolutely the best visit I have ever had. Even though I have a low tolerance for pain, my filling wasn't bad. The front desk staff was pleasant, and they even took my insurance. Great experience. Definitely recommend!

EDIT BELOW: I spent years at Avicenna dental and was lukewarm on their services. My cleanings generally did not feel particularly thorough, and were completed quickly, but the convenience outweighed my concerns. Recently however I needed an orthodontic procedure, and I was charged an absurd amount for not even 10 minutes of work. I had been told an orthodontist would be handling it, but the scope of work did not appear consistent with a full orthodontic intervention. I am extremely disappointed, and will not be returning, even for routine dental work. Amendment: I was invited to discuss with the dentist, and the discrepancy in understanding what “fix” entails lies in a miscommunication. Had I been informed what exactly the cost entailed, I would have been able to make an educated decision. That said, the fees are what they are, while on the patient side everything appeared arbitrary. I appreciate Avicenna Dental reaching out and discussing further with me. Review updated to reflect my overall experience. They are competent, if a bit rushed at times (hence my concerns with cleanings).

Too many policies and procedures that don’t benefit the patients in anyway. Dental cleanings are preventative twice a year. Im told that I should only come once because x rays aren’t covered by the insurance twice in a year or I can pay out of pocket. Cleanings can’t happen without x-rays. I book the appointment 6months out only for them to cancel the appointment because I didn’t confirm the appointment via phone when they called me a day prior. Its the holiday season and its been extremely busy and I was traveling. Mind you I never received any text messages. Like at all. Just a call the day before saying to confirm. Not one text. Not any information saying hey your appointment will be cancelled if you don’t call us back. Nothing. So I call back the morning of the appointment to confirm as directed and they are like we can’t honor the appointment because you didn’t respond to the messages and calls. Meanwhile Im responding by calling and I never received any text messages. They say, “its nothing we can do, we can rebook for next month.” Im like I waited six months for this appointment. How do you cancel the appointment because I wasn’t able to answer the phone days prior. It’s unfortunate that in our communities we can’t receive proper treatment and this is how dental health is managed FOR KIDS! It’s really sad and I definitely won’t be returning here. Its hard finding a dentist in network but its clear Im not gaining anything by being a patient with this one.

I am extremely disappointed and angry about my experience with this dental office. The staff is incredibly rude, disrespectful, and completely unprofessional. I was treated terribly just for asking basic questions about charges. They took money without clear explanation, and it honestly felt like theft. Their billing practices are misleading and dishonest. Because of how wrong this felt, I had to contact my insurance directly to report and verify the charges. Instead of trying to fix the issue, they were dismissive, rude, and acted like they didn’t care at all. This place prioritizes money over patients and has zero integrity. I regret ever coming here. I would never recommend this office to anyone. Save yourself the stress, disrespect, and potential financial issues and go somewhere else.

Front desk staff has gotten so disrespectful for absolutely NO REASON in the last few months. If I’m an established patient calling to inquire about after care they shouldn’t be so dismissive about it. I’ve had other receptionists at Avicenna be kind and helpful. I can have empathy for receptionists, but the verbal attitude is disgusting. If you can’t communicate with patients competently and kindly you should find somewhere else to work. And yes I posted my full name so you can be aware it who it was. I’ve been coming here over 4 years and this is the first time I’m absolutely disgusted by the front desk.
