About

Balkh Shish Kabab House is an authentic Afghan restaurant located in Astoria, Queens, New York, that has been serving the community since 1997[3]. Founded by Mohammad Nasim and Abdul Jabeer, the restaurant was established with the mission of bringing genuine Afghan cuisine to the heart of New York[1][3]. Named after the historic town of Balkh in the northeast province of Afghanistan—the birthplace of one of the partners and main chef Abdul[2]—the establishment reflects a deep commitment to preserving and sharing Afghanistan's rich culinary heritage.

The restaurant's culinary philosophy is rooted in authenticity and quality. Afghan cuisine represents a unique fusion of flavors influenced by the country's geographic position and cultural exchanges with neighboring regions. Balkh Shish Kabab House draws inspiration from Greek, Turkish, Middle Eastern, Indian, and Russian culinary traditions, creating a distinctive patchwork of satisfying and delicious dishes that are both familiar to diverse palates and uniquely Afghan[1]. This multicultural approach to cooking reflects Afghanistan's own history as a crossroads of civilizations and trade routes.

At the heart of Balkh Shish Kabab House's operation is a dedication to quality ingredients and meticulous preparation. The founders, Mohammad Nasim and Abdul Jabeer, personally ensure that each guest receives a meal that delights the senses and showcases the best of Afghan culture[1]. The restaurant's commitment to excellence is evident in every aspect of its operation, from ingredient selection to cooking technique. Although the menu is intentionally curated rather than extensive, this focused approach allows the kitchen to deliver the best possible flavors in each dish served[1].

The restaurant's signature offerings center on shish kebabs, which are prepared with exceptional skill and attention to detail. The kitchen features over a dozen varieties of kebabs, each characterized by juicy, tender meat with a subtle charred exterior that adds depth to the flavor profile[2]. Beyond kebabs, the menu includes traditional Afghan specialties such as mato—beef dumplings served with curry and yogurt accompanied by both red and green spicy sauces[2]—and Qaw Lamb Meat, described as an Afghan version of lamb shank served with brown basmati rice, raisins, and carrots, slow-baked after hours of special marination[2]. The restaurant also offers unique items like fried pumpkin turnovers, demonstrating the breadth of Afghan culinary traditions[5].

The dining experience at Balkh Shish Kabab House extends beyond food to encompass atmosphere and hospitality. The restaurant features a breezy garden and a colorful dining room adorned with traditional rugs and oil paintings, including a portrait of a famous Afghan singer known as "the Sinatra of Afghanistan"[1]. The long, narrow dining room with its open kitchen design allows guests to observe the culinary action and connect with the cooking process[5]. The staff and owners make a deliberate effort to visit each table, ensuring that every guest feels welcomed and at home[1]. This emphasis on warmth and hospitality reflects the values of Afghan culture itself.

Located under the elevated subway tracks in Astoria, the restaurant creates a unique atmosphere where patrons feel transported by the cuisine, ambiance, and predominantly Afghan clientele[2]. The service is characterized as laid-back and relaxed, with staff members who are courteous, welcoming, and knowledgeable about the menu, willing to guide guests through proper pronunciation and help them navigate unfamiliar dishes[5]. The restaurant does not rush diners, allowing them to enjoy their meal at a comfortable pace[5].

Balkh Shish Kabab House has established itself as a culinary gem in Astoria, recognized for its authentic Afghan flavors and commitment to community[4]. The restaurant's nearly three-decade presence in the neighborhood has made it a destination for those seeking genuine Afghan cuisine and a welcoming dining environment that reflects the hospitality and warmth of Afghan culture.

I’ve been coming here since I was 6 years old!! Which makes it about 30 years now 😳😳💛 I no longer live in Astoria but make the very long drive to enjoy my absolute favorite Afghan food - probably ever. The food is so authentic and the flavors have never changed! I highly recommend their rice dishes especially the chicken kebab. My husband always gets the combo it’s so much food for a reasonable price. The ownership has never changed it tells you a lot about the place. Please don’t ever leave 💛💛

A Hidden Gem of Flavor and Warmth – Balkh Kebab House is a Must-Try! Balkh Kebab House is an absolute delight! From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with warm hospitality and the comforting aroma of authentic Afghan cuisine. The restaurant is clean, welcoming, and perfect for a casual meal or a cozy dinner with friends and family. The food? Incredible. Every dish is made with care and packed with flavor. The kebabs are perfectly grilled—tender, juicy, and seasoned just right. I highly recommend the chicken and lamb kebabs, but honestly, everything on the menu is a hit. The rice is fragrant and fluffy, the naan is fresh and warm, and the chutneys add a perfect kick of spice and freshness. What I especially love is how healthy and hearty the food is. You can taste the quality of the ingredients, and the balance of protein, grains, and vegetables makes for a satisfying and nourishing meal. If you’re looking for a place that serves delicious, authentic food with a side of genuine hospitality, Balkh Kebab House is the spot. Highly recommended!
