About

Nestled in the historic and family-centric neighborhood of the Upper West Side at 400 West End Ave, Dentistry for Children stands as a beacon of specialized pediatric oral healthcare in New York City. This practice is built on the fundamental understanding that a child's early dental experiences shape their attitude towards oral health for a lifetime. More than just a dental office, it is a carefully designed environment where science, psychology, and compassion converge to deliver exceptional care tailored exclusively to young patients, from infancy through adolescence.

The philosophy of Dentistry for Children is rooted in a preventive and educational mission. The practice is dedicated to not only treating dental issues but, more importantly, to preventing them through comprehensive patient and parent education. The mission is to foster a generation of children who view dental visits as positive, routine healthcare experiences rather than sources of anxiety. This is achieved by creating a trust-based relationship from the very first visit, often recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry to occur by a child's first birthday or upon the eruption of the first tooth.

What truly sets Dentistry for Children apart is its intentional, child-focused environment and methodology. The office is designed to be a welcoming, engaging, and non-threatening space. From themed operatories to a waiting area that feels more like a playroom, every detail is calibrated to reduce anxiety and promote comfort. The clinical team, led by specialized pediatric dentists and hygienists, are experts in child development and behavior management techniques, including "tell-show-do," positive reinforcement, and distraction. This expertise allows them to provide effective care for children with a wide range of needs, including those with dental anxiety, special healthcare needs, or developmental differences.

The practice’s unique value proposition lies in its combination of top-tier clinical expertise, a profoundly empathetic approach, and a commitment to convenience for New York City families. By focusing solely on pediatric dentistry, the dentists possess deep, nuanced knowledge of growth patterns, developmental dental issues, preventive strategies for young patients, and the latest techniques in minimally invasive care. They serve as crucial partners to parents, offering guidance on thumb-sucking, pacifier use, nutrition, sports mouthguards, and early orthodontic evaluation.

Dentistry for Children distinguishes itself from general family dentists through this dedicated specialization. While a general dentist may see patients of all ages, the pediatric specialists here have completed additional years of rigorous residency training focused exclusively on infants, children, adolescents, and those with special needs. This training encompasses advanced behavior guidance, sedation, hospital dentistry, and the management of developing teeth and jaws. Their practice is built on the principle that children are not just small adults; their dental care requires specific knowledge, tools, and communication styles.

In the competitive landscape of Manhattan healthcare, the practice carves out its niche through unwavering commitment to a positive patient experience, preventive education, and leveraging technology designed for pediatric applications, such as digital X-rays with minimal radiation, child-friendly intraoral cameras, and appealing fluoride treatment options. They understand the busy lives of New York families and strive to be a reliable, calming, and expert resource for all aspects of a child's oral health, establishing a dental home that families can trust through every stage of their child's growth.

We recently took our almost two-year-old daughter to Dentistry for Children, and the experience was nothing short of amazing, thanks to the incredible Dr. Amanda Dewundara. From the moment we walked in, Dr. Amanda made our daughter feel comfortable, safe, and even curious about her dental visit. She was so kind and caring, taking the time to engage our daughter with toys, songs, and gentle explanations of every tool and step along the way. Dr. Amanda didn’t just treat our daughter, she connected with her. This was only a routine cleaning, but the level of care and attention made it feel so much more meaningful. Compared to our daughter’s first dental visit at another practice, which felt rushed and impersonal, this visit was a complete 180. Dr. Amanda went above and beyond. She patiently answered all of our questions, educated us on dental hygiene best practices, and even gave us a super helpful “Tooth Snack Guide” to help prevent cavities. Honestly, this was the best dental visit I’ve ever experienced, even as an adult. I genuinely wish Dr. Amanda could be my dentist! If you're looking for a thoughtful, thorough, and truly child-centered dental experience, I cannot recommend Dr. Amanda and Dentistry for Children enough. You and your child will be in the best hands.

The dentist was very professional and took the time to answer all of my questions. He was also very good helping my 6 year old feel comfortable in the chair. It was quick but thorough as a kid’s dentist appointment should be! Very happy and would recommend.

Made an appointment with the front desk almost a month ago. I was told someone would call me to confirm the appointment or to Let me know about a location in Brooklyn that may be more convenient as the dr has an office there as well. On the day of my appointment, today, I called the office to make sure we were still good for today as no one ever called or left a message otherwise. At this point I was told that the dr was not in and that they were sorry but that the next apoointmet would be November 8th. Just really annoyed and disappointed that they never followed up and wasted my time.
