About
First Heritage Co-operative Credit Union Limited (FHC) is the largest open bond credit union in Jamaica, with a combined heritage spanning over 100 years. It was established on August 1, 2012, through the historic merger of Churches Co-operative Credit Union and GSB Co-operative Credit Union, marking the first merger of its kind in the Jamaican credit union movement. This strategic amalgamation was the result of discussions that began in October 2010, aimed at creating a stronger, more versatile financial institution to better serve its members. In 2015, FHC further expanded by integrating the business and operations of St. Thomas Co-operative Credit Union Limited, enhancing its reach and capacity to support agricultural and small business lending across rural Jamaica. This expansion brought the total number of branches to eleven, facilitating greater access to financial services nationwide.
FHC’s mission centers on providing comprehensive financial solutions tailored to meet the diverse needs of its members at every stage of life. Its membership bond includes civil servants, employees of statutory bodies and public corporations, members of religious organizations, and residents or workers in St. Thomas and their families. Serving over 200,000 members, FHC offers a broad portfolio of more than forty-two products and services designed to support personal financial growth, investment, and entrepreneurship.
The credit union is distinguished by its commitment to community development and economic empowerment, particularly through its focus on agricultural lending and micro and small business financing. This focus supports farmers and entrepreneurs, fostering economic growth in rural areas and contributing positively to Jamaica’s overall economy. FHC’s unique value proposition lies in its extensive heritage, large membership base, and its pioneering role in credit union mergers and service expansion in Jamaica.
FHC also emphasizes social responsibility, demonstrated through community engagement activities such as educational programs and environmental initiatives. For example, during Credit Union Week, it has organized tree-planting exercises and heritage tours for school children, reinforcing its theme of 'People Helping People' and its dedication to nurturing future generations.
With a professional and member-centric approach, First Heritage Co-operative Credit Union Limited continues to innovate and expand its services, maintaining a legacy of transformation and leadership within Jamaica’s financial cooperative sector. Its extensive experience, comprehensive service offerings, and strategic growth initiatives set it apart as a trusted financial partner committed to the prosperity of its members and the wider community.
