About

Open Sesame Dentistry, located at 191 Amsterdam Ave in the heart of Manhattan's Upper West Side, New York City, stands as a beacon of excellence in pediatric dental care, dedicated exclusively to the oral health of children from infancy through adolescence. With over 20 years of specialized experience, this premier practice has built a sterling reputation as a 5-star rated pediatric dentist, transforming what can often be a daunting experience for young patients into fun, friendly, and stress-free visits that both children and parents cherish. Founded by Dr. Suzanne Grady, a board-certified pediatric dentist whose passion for children's dentistry is matched only by her profound expertise, Open Sesame Dentistry opened its doors in October 2007, bringing her visionary approach to the vibrant Upper West Side community. Dr. Grady's journey into pediatric dentistry is as inspiring as it is rigorous: she earned a bachelor's degree in child psychology from the University of Buffalo, providing her with an invaluable foundation in understanding the developmental and emotional needs of young patients. NYU College of Dentistry then awarded her a full academic scholarship, where she graduated in the upper quintile of her class. Her advanced training continued with a three-year pediatric dentistry residency, followed by specialized work in TMJ disorders during her NYU tenure. Today, she remains a professor at St. Barnabas Hospital, mentoring the next generation of dentists while maintaining her private practice.

The mission of Open Sesame Dentistry is refreshingly straightforward yet profoundly impactful: to deliver the very best possible dental treatment and care for children, ensuring every visit is memorable, painless, and positive. This singular focus sets the practice apart in a field often overwhelmed by generalist approaches. Unlike many dental offices that juggle multiple demographics and priorities, Open Sesame is unapologetically child-centric, creating a nurturing environment where kids feel at ease from the moment they arrive. The office's friendly, welcoming atmosphere—complete with thoughtful design elements tailored to young visitors—eliminates the typical anxieties associated with dental care. Parents appreciate the compassionate understanding of their concerns, as the team not only treats dental issues but educates families on preventive practices, laying the groundwork for lifelong oral health. The health of primary teeth is emphasized as crucial for the proper development of permanent dentition, a principle Dr. Grady champions through personalized guidance.

Services at Open Sesame Dentistry are comprehensive, spanning the full spectrum of pediatric needs across key developmental stages: birth to age 2 (initial exams, eruption monitoring, and parental education on decay prevention); preschool years (3-5, focusing on full primary dentition and early tooth loss surveillance); and primary school ages (6-11, tracking permanent tooth emergence, alignment, and orthodontic precursors). Core offerings include routine dental exams and cleanings, fluoride treatments and sealants for cavity prevention, fillings and crowns for restorative needs, extractions when necessary, first visits for infants, and advanced options like nitrous oxide and sedation dentistry for anxious or special needs patients. The practice also handles general inquiries and more complex procedures with the same gentle precision, serving infants, children, adolescents, and those with unique requirements throughout Manhattan and beyond.

What truly distinguishes Open Sesame Dentistry is its unique value proposition: a one-on-one, personalized approach that prioritizes quality over quantity. Dr. Grady invests time in truly knowing each child and parent, avoiding the fragmented care model of shuffling patients between staff. There are no long waits or rushed consultations—every visit features continuity with the same trusted provider, fostering deep trust and tailored treatment plans. As a mother herself, Dr. Grady brings an intuitive attunement to the evolving needs of different childhood stages, blending clinical expertise with empathy honed from her child psychology background. This holistic methodology ensures not just healthy smiles but confident, educated patients who view dentistry positively. The practice's commitment to excellence is evident in its top ratings, glowing client testimonials, and accreditations, reflecting a track record of outstanding outcomes. Saturday appointments by request add flexibility for busy families, while modern conveniences like SMS texting and email streamline communication.

In an era where pediatric dental care can feel impersonal, Open Sesame Dentistry shines by humanizing the experience. It's more than a dental office; it's a partner in your child's oral health journey, where expert diagnosis meets compassionate teaching. Whether addressing routine maintenance or specialized interventions, the team upholds the highest standards, always with the child's best interests at heart. For New York families seeking a pediatric dentist who makes every visit easy and exceptional, Open Sesame Dentistry is the gold standard—proving that outstanding care can indeed open the door to lifelong dental wellness. My kids have been with this practice for a good while now. I can say that Dr. Grady is an excellent dentist who also accommodates the needs of her customers. She's willing to stay open longer such that a high school patient would not have to miss any school time on the account of a dental appointment.

We left this dentistry when we moved neighbourhoods and cancelled appointments well in advance. They charged us anyway and have been phoning me and my husband for over a year continuously, accepting no fault on their behalf for continuing sending us bills for an appointment they separately admitted was cancelled in time. I never leave bad reviews but I’m tired of what feels like harassment at this point. Just choose a different dentist.
